Statement from the Orthodox Public Affairs Committee (OPAC) on the recent activities in Syria

The Orthodox Public Affairs Committee (OPAC) remains deeply concerned about the ongoing situation in Syria, particularly the challenges faced by its Christian population. As the region continues to experience significant political and social upheaval, we urge all governing authorities to uphold the rights of Christians and other religious minorities to practice their faith freely, without fear of persecution or discrimination.

The ancient Christian communities in Syria are integral to the fabric of the region’s history and culture. They have endured unimaginable hardships during the years of conflict, including displacement, violence, and the destruction of sacred places of worship. We commend the resilience of these communities and encourage the new Syrian regime to ensure that their rights to religious freedom are respected and preserved.

OPAC has actively stood in solidarity with the Syrian Orthodox community. As part of our mission to support Orthodox Christians worldwide, we have sent over a thousand Bibles and educational materials to those in Syria seeking to learn the word of God—many of whom have grown up without access to scripture due to the turmoil of war. Providing these Bibles is a small yet meaningful step in helping young Syrian Christians reconnect with their faith and heritage, offering hope and spiritual guidance in these challenging times.

We call on the international community to remain vigilant in safeguarding the rights of religious minorities in Syria and across the region. OPAC reaffirms its commitment to advocating for the protection of not only Orthodox Christians worldwide, but all people of conscience and stands in prayerful solidarity with the faithful in Syria and across the entire region, hoping for a future of peace, stability, and religious coexistence.

Let us work together to ensure that the light of faith continues to shine brightly in the cradle of Christianity.

Truth Lives in Light!
