Statement from the Orthodox Public Affairs Committee
The Orthodox Public Affairs Committee (OPAC) expresses its deep concern regarding access to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher during this sacred season of Easter in the Holy Land.
At a time when Christians around the world turn their hearts and prayers toward Jerusalem—the spiritual center of the Christian faith—we affirm the importance of ensuring that Christian leaders and faithful worshippers are able to participate meaningfully in the observances of this most holy period.
We recognize the significant security sensitivities arising from the ongoing conflict and appreciate the complexities faced by authorities responsible for maintaining public safety. At the same time, it is essential that the longstanding rights and religious freedoms of Christians in Jerusalem are respected and preserved, particularly during Easter.
OPAC respectfully calls upon both local Christian communities and Israeli authorities to work together in good faith to find a reasonable and balanced solution that ensures access to holy sites while addressing legitimate security concerns. Cooperation and mutual understanding are critical in safeguarding both public safety and religious dignity.
With Eastern Orthodox Holy Week approaching next week, we further call for a swift and thoughtful resolution that will allow Orthodox Christians the ability to celebrate their traditions in peace and with reasonable access to their holy places.
In this season of reflection and renewal, we join Christians everywhere in praying for peace in Jerusalem and throughout the world. May this holy time serve as a reminder of our shared humanity and the enduring call to reconciliation and understanding
Truth Lives in Light!
